2.7: Mid-Semester 2 Reflection

1. What do you see as the most important thing you learned about immigration in the late 19th century? Why?

I learned about immigration stereotypes and why they were harmful to immigrants. These stereotypes are most often untrue and have no reason to be believed. Learning this taught me that most immigrants do not negatively affect society, and this made me have a more open mind.

2. What do you see as the most important thing you learned about immigration today? Why?

I learned that immigrants still are subject to stereotypes and that this is more prevalent in society now than ever. I learned the way that these stereotypes started and how they change opinions of people in the modern world.

3. What do you see as the 2 most challenging aspects of living in 19th century urban settings, and how would you evaluate Americans' success (either as individuals or collectively) in meeting those challenges?

One of the most challenging aspects of life back then was living conditions. They were very poor and caused health problems and hazards. Another challenge was the regulations in workplaces. Due to low safety they could cause fires and other hazards. This made it more difficult for Americans to be successful due to these conditions.

4. One could argue that the effort to build the Highline has some things in common with late 19th and early 20th century Progressivism. Use your knowledge of Progressivism to identify those similarities, being sure to discuss specific details from the film. Then, demonstrate your knowledge of the nature and context of the Progressive moment by explaining how the effort to build the highline is dissimilar from Progressivism.

The Highline is progressive because it turned something that was no longer useful into something innovate that the citizens of New York would like. In the film it shows that it was created to become something beautiful and interesting. On the other hand, it is dissimilar from progressivism because they did not physically change the structure. They made it appear different, but did not change it too much.
