Civil War Love Letters

Civil War Letters

Theme- Love

These five love letters are written from Captain James A. Sayles to his sweetheart, Florence Lee. These letters express his love for her and describe his experiences in fighting in the war. They were all written throughout 1864 and show what his life was like at the time. The letters show the theme of love at the time of the war and allow the reader(s) to have empathy for both James and Florence. Can you imagine what it would be like to have to leave your loved ones to fight in a war with no guarantee for your survival? These letters are very short and casually written but still allow insight into what their lives were like while these letters were being written. They prove that even in the most difficult of times, love can prevail and this is why it is so important. The casual nature of the writing shows that even over time, their love for each other lasted.

The first letter James writes to Florence was written on February 10, 1864. In this letter, James discusses his experience with having his photograph taken, vignette style. He says that he does not like the photo, but still says he will send it to her. He only asks that she puts it somewhere inconspicuous so that others will not see it.

This letter was written on February 20, 1864. James writes to Florence to thank her for sending him a photo of her for him to keep. His gratitude and love towards her are very evident in this short, yet sweet letter that he wrote for her.

This letter is again, written to Florence Lee. It was addressed on February 24, 1864. In this letter, James states that the letters from Florence are his greatest pleasure, and that he wishes he could receive one from her every single day. He also says that he wishes not to keep their engagement clandestine, and that he wouldn't mind if the whole world knew about it.

James wrote this letter on March 14, 1864. He tells Florence that he is very bored, but glad to have received one of her letters a few days before. He had contracted a cold which prevented him from speaking for several days.

The last letter was written on June 11, 1864. In this letter, James writes that he has not heard form his beloved Florence, in many days, and states that she would write more if he knew how much he worried about her. He also discusses his experience with being complimented about his hard work and what it was like to be promoted while fighting in the war.
